Soccorro Barrutia
Soccorro Barrutia Marquez was born in Tepic, Nayarit (Mexico). At a very young age, she
enrolled in the prestigious Santa Teresita Academy in her hometown, where she received her
diploma with honorable mention. Later, the same academy would call her to form part of the
teaching body, where she stood out as a teacher.
The Amado Nervo University invited her to exhibit her work in the IV Regional Fair in
Tepic, where she recognized as one of the best in the art of painting. Soccorro came to the
United States during the 1970’s. Her preference for classical painting, without overlooking
other styles of painting, has driven her to develop her own techniques, giving origin to a
unique and unmistakable style. It is a style where harmony, nature, vivid colors evoke distinct
feelings. She states: “It was like a marvelous revelation! How can I explain how much I enjoy
seeing the three primary colors convert into the most incredible colors, into a multicolor and
magnificent variety of shades.” In effect, her works can be recognized by the dark backgrounds,
which contrast with the vivacity and delicacy of the object. It can be said, without a doubt,
that Soccorro is a woman who greatly enjoys the fine arts. That is why, throughout her life,
not only painting, but also poetry and music have been places from which she has been able to
mold her inspiration.
