The San Fernando Museum of Art and History
Proudly Presents
"Día de los Muertos, la tradición"
(“Day of the Dead, the tradition”)
featuring original works by:
Cynthia Alarcon-Negrete, Diane Correa de Rempel, Lalo Garcia, Sergio Hernandez,
David Jimenez, Socorro Barrutia.
This Exhibit continues the Mexican tradition of honoring the deceased through rituals,
like setting up alters, and through celebrations, that include traditional food and music. It
features the paintings and photographs of local artists who capture the spirit of Dia de los
Muertos through their work. It also features five “altars” arranged by artists and members of
San Fernando community groups.
In various towns of Mexico, altars are put up on November 2, which coincides with All Souls
Day in the Catholic tradition. The altars in this exhibit remember local children, mother,
grandmothers, and other family members who have passed on. Although “altares” are traditionally
set up in cemeteries and homes for one or two days (November 1st and 2nd), they will remain on
exhibit in this way the public will be able to visit the museum until the end of January 2006.
In this way the public will be able to visit the museum during this period to learn about the
Dia de los Muetros customs and to appreciate the artistic talents of the artist in relation to
this theme.
