San Fernando Museum of Art and History
This is a museum and cultural arts center that was created to promote the cultural arts in
the historic San Fernando area: visual art, music, dance, drama, poetry...
The Old Fire Station
The Fire Station on South Brand Blvd. in San Fernando was built in the mid 1900’s and served as
the Fire Station for the City of San Fernando until the early 1970’s. It eventually became the
headquarters for the San Fernando Chamber of Commerce until the late 1990’s. Since then, antique
cars have been housed in the bay area of the fire station. Around the year 2001, the Friends of
the Lopez Adobe proposed the idea of transforming the Old Fire Station into a museum.
After
introducing this idea to the San Fernando Historical Commission and the Cultural Arts Commission,
it was suggested that the building could become an art museum.
In time, the San Fernando City
Council approved of the concept of an art and history museum. After approximately a year of
planning, the San Fernando City Council approved of the Commission’s plan for an art and history
museum.
The Friends of the Lopez Adobe have been serving as the lead agency, and have prepared
the building for its opening as an art and history museum.
In renovating the truck bay area,
some elements of the industrial fire station have been retained to create an unique environment
for an art and history museum. Opened July 4, 2005.
Thanks to the San Fernando Women’s Club, San Fernando Business and Professional Women
and the San Fernando Valley Historical Society for making the museum a reality.
